At the Disco Tickets Formation of the Band In 2004, childhood friends Ryan Ross and Spencer Smith began playing music together in the ninth grade. Ross would sing and play guitar and Smith was on the drums. They soon invited their friend Brent Wilson to play bass for the band and shortly after had classmate Brendon Urie tryout on guitar. The four young boys would practice playing together in Smith’s grandmother’s living room. Also, the boys’ band started out simply as a cover band. They recorded a few demos together and released their works online.
Ross and Urie one day sent one of their demos to bassist,. Wentz traveled from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to hear the band play. After listening to a few songs, he immediately wanted to sign them to the independent record label he had just started called Decaydance Records (later renamed DCD2 Records). At the Disco was the first band to be signed to Wentz’s label. A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out In the summer of 2005, the band worked on recording their first studio album in College Park, Maryland. By September the album was complete and A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out was officially released as the band’s debut album. It was not a hit right away but slowly began to become more popular.
It debuted at number 112 on the Billboard 200. After a year the album had become certified Platinum by the RIAA and climbed up the charts, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard 200. The music video for their single “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” won Video of the Year at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. Their success had completely blossomed out of nowhere. Unfortunately, with the success came some drama. Bassist of the band, Brent Wilson, was fired from the band.
Smith was quoted in an email saying, “We made the decision based on Brent’s lack of responsibility and the fact that he wasn’t progressing musically with the band.” Wilson ended up suing the band for 25% of royalties from the album’s sales. After Wilson was fired, he was replaced by bassist Jon Walker. The new quartet released Panic! At the Disco’s second studio album in 2008, which was called Pretty. Was recorded at the Studio at the Palms in Paradise, Nevada and released by Decaydance Records again. The album peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and the album’s lead single, “Nine in the Afternoon” became certified Platinum by the RIAA. The style of Pretty.
Strayed from the sound of A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, although it seemed that the change was well accepted by fans. After the release of the album, Panic! Toured with and for the Rock Band Live Tour. It was clear that Panic! Was heading in a new direction with their sound. In the spring of 2009, Ryan Ross and John Walker announced that they would be separating from the band due to creative differences.
Urie wanted the band to use elements of pop and Ross/Walker wanted to remain with the retro-rock sound. The split was amicable and Ross and Walker formed their own duo called The Young Veins. Vices & Virtues The first single recorded without Ross and Walker was “New Perspective”, which would appear on the soundtrack for the movie Jennifer’s Body. The band also recruited bassist Dallon Weekes and guitarist Ian Crawford as touring musicians for live performances. While Urie and Smith were working on recording the band’s third studio album, they added Weekes to the official lineup of the group, making it a three-member band.
The third studio album was called Vices & Virtues and was released on March 22, 2011. Weekes was not involved with the recording of this album but did contribute to the album’s artwork. Vices & Virtues debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 and ended up becoming certified Gold by the RIAA. In promotion of the album, the band embarked on the Vices & Virtues Tour.
Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! After the tour ended, Urie, Smith, and Weekes began preparations for the band’s fourth studio album.
During recording, touring guitarist Ian Crawford left the band and was replaced by another touring guitarist for live performances, Kenneth Harris. Right before the release of Panic!’s new album, Spencer Smith had to separate himself from the band. Smith admitted he had been dealing with alcohol and drug abuse and was to take time to get the help he needed. The new album was called Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! And was released in October 2013. It was the last Panic!
At the Disco album Spencer Smith would be featured on. Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! Peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and became certified Gold by the RIAA. Since Smith left the band, Dan Pawlovich (from ) was added as a touring drummer for live performances.
Death of a Bachelor Two years later Smith announced that he had officially left the band after his two-year hiatus. Also around this time, Weekes returned to being a touring member of the band, stating that he was “not contributing creatively anymore”. Therefore, Panic! At the Disco became a one-man band with just Brendon Urie. Urie released the band’s fifth studio album, Death of a Bachelor, in January 2016 as the sole vocalist and instrumentalist. The album debuted at number 1, becoming Panic!
At the Disco’s first number 1 album. It became certified Platinum by the RIAA and was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards. It seemed like Urie was doing quite alright on his own. Urie announced that there would be a Death of a Bachelor Tour in 2017 with and as the opening acts. After the tour, Dallon Weekes officially left the band, who was just a touring member at the time. He was replaced by touring bassist Nicole Row.
Pray for the Wicked Continuing as a one-man band, Urie released a follow up album to Death of a Bachelor called Pray for the Wicked. This is the band’s sixth official studio album and was recently released on June 22, 2018. It is the second Panic! At the Disco album with only Urie in the lineup. Pray for the Wicked debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the band’s second number 1 album. At the Disco will be embarking on another tour in support of the newest album.
