When Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) had released, I had asked the PR person connected to Rajshri about their conception of the stories. Rajshri’s Maine Pyar Kiya had one boy one girl concept. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun had 2 brothers and 2 sisters concept. I asked him did they plan to have 3 brothers and 3 sisters concept for the next movie? The man just stared at me.

Later I heard about the making of Hum Saath Saath Hain, where there are 3 brothers, one sister in the same family. The others are unrelated. I have a suspicion that before making this movie, their concept was a 3-brothers-and-3-sisters’ concept. When I mentioned it they changed the story.

Movie: This song appears in 1999 hit family drama Hum Saath Saath Hain (We are Together) directed by Sooraj Barjatiya and produced by Kamal Kumar Barjatiya, Rajkumar Barjatiya and Ajit Kumar Barjatiya under the banner of Rajshri Productions. The movie starred Mohnish Bahl, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, Karishma Kapoor, Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Neelam Kothari, etc. The movie was shot in Mumbai’s Film City and the villages of Rajasthan. Most of the beginning of the movie goes like the video recording of events in a normal family to the extent of boring the spectator. The movie was dubbed into the Telugu Premaanuraagam. It is the 25 th wedding anniversary of Mamta (Reema Lagoo) and Ramkishan (Alok Nath).

They have 3 sons – Vivek (Mohnish Bahl), Mamta’s stepson and disabled in one hand due to a childhood accident when he had saved his younger brothers Prem (Salman Khan) and Vinod (Saif Ali Khan). Due to the disability, many marriageable girls do not agree to marry him. Adarsh (Rajeev Verma) is a businessman and he and his daughter Sadhana (Tabu) attend the family function of the anniversary celebrations and get impressed by the warmth and the solidarity of Vivek and his family. Vivek and Sadhana get married despite his disability. Preeti (Sonali Bendre), a medical doctor and Prem (Salman Khan), a student of business are childhood friends and the friendship has blossomed into love.

But their love remains unspoken. Immediately after Vivek and Sadhana’s marriage, the family announces the engagement of Prem and Preeti. The fun-loving and energetic pair of Sapna (Karishma Kapoor) and Vinod (Saif Ali Khan) also fall in love with each other and get engaged on a trip to Rampur in Rajasthan. It is during that event that Sapna complains about how Vinod treats her to her would-be mother-in-law through this song. Song: The music of this song was composed by Raam-Lakshman and the lyrics were penned by R Kiran.

The girl imagines that her beloved is Lord Krishna and considers his mother as Yashoda Ma. Thus she complains to the older woman about how her son has been treating her and teasing her.

Video: Cinematography is by Rajan Kinagi. The dance has been choreographed by Jay Borade. The video opens with the veiled figure of Karishma Kapoor sitting on the floor and beginning the song. Few other girls also join her in the dance. Everybody present is enjoying the song and dance sequence. Sadashiv Amrapurkar, who plays Karishma Kapoor’s father brings some glasses of cool drinks and serves it at the pooja place to God.

Saif Ali Khan has joined Karishma Kapoor by now. Karishma Kapoor picks up a mud pot and Saif Ali Khan pulls it out of her hands to place it on his head and dance like her. She just pushes him toward his brothers and they support him when he falls on them. Saif Ali Khan places a ring on Karishma Kapoor’s ring finger and there is a fall of flower petals on them from the above floor. Sadashiv Amrapurkar imagines that his daughter Karishma Kapoor is the queen and there are many maids around her to serve her. Sonali Bendre takes over and sings about Salman Khan. Salman Khan also joins her in the dance.

Next, Tabu sings and dances about Mohnish Bahl. She is joined in the dance by Karishma Kapoor and Sonali Bendre. Then, Reema Lagoo kisses all her 3 daughters-in-law.

The video ends with Saif Ali Khan pulling Karishma Kapoor to take her somewhere. Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Alka Yagnik and Anuradha Paudwal and onscreen performances are by Karishma Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Salman Khan, Tabu, Mohnish Bahl, Reema Lagoo, etc. Cultural Influence: The cultural influence of this song is really the concept of using the names of Lord Krishna and Yashoda Ma in the song and imagining oneself to be Radha.
